U.S. President Donald Trump has warned Russia that it will face “very severe consequences”, including tariffs and sanctions, if Moscow doesn’t stop the war with Ukraine after the meeting with his counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska.Speaking at the Kennedy Center in Washington, Trump confirmed that Russia will face actions if Putin does not commit to stopping hostilities. The summit is scheduled for August 15, 2025, at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage.
Trump also touched upon possibly doing a rapid follow-up meeting featuring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, “if the first one goes okay.” He also said he hoped to quickly convene a three-way session with Putin and Zelenskyy.
European leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron, have pushed for Zelenskyy’s involvement in any negotiation, saying that Ukraine must have a seat at the table. Zelenskyy, meanwhile, has rejected any territorial concessions in exchange for peace by naming such terms unconstitutional.Meanwhile, Russian forces reportedly have continued advancing in eastern Ukraine, particularly around Pokrovsk, adding further attention to the Trump-Putin talks.
