TrumpRx: Donald Trump launches new website to sell drugs to Americans at lower costs

Date:

In yet another unprecedented development from the White House, arguably for the first time, the sitting US president has launched a new website, carrying his own name, to sell drugs to Americans at a cheaper price.Amid rising criticism over affordability, in an effort to combat cost-of-living worries that could endanger his party in November’s legislative elections, President Donald Trump established a new website to assist Americans in directly purchasing specific medications at a discount.

“Starting tonight, dozens of the most commonly used prescription drugs will be available at dramatic discounts for all consumers through a new website, TrumpRx.gov,” Trump said at the White House. The administration has made a point of negotiating deals with over a dozen of the biggest pharmaceutical corporations in the world, such as Novo Nordisk A/S, Pfizer Inc., and Eli Lilly & Co., frequently in exchange for a decrease in imposed tariffs.

Trump said that weight-loss medications like Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic and Wegovy, which retail for $199 each, would be among the more than 40 medications that are now accessible. Additionally, the president declared that EMD Serono Inc. would “dramatically cut the cost of its most common IVF drug.”

The website is a component of a larger effort to address the affordability issues that Americans have raised, which have tainted voters’ opinions of Trump’s economic plan.

The initiative was first made public in September as part of the government’s campaign to reduce the cost of pharmaceuticals in the United States. It functions by letting patients search for a particular medication and then directing them to the websites of pharmaceutical businesses where they may purchase the goods at a discounted price.

Whether the website will drastically reduce costs and persuade many Americans to pay cash for medications rather than using insurance is still up in the air.

President Donald Trump issued letters with a list of demands to 17 pharmaceutical companies over the summer. He demanded that they provide innovative therapies in the US at the same cost as those in other developed countries, sell customers cheaper medications directly, and reduce the costs they charge Medicaid, the health insurance programme for low-income and disabled individuals.
