“The aircraft landed safely, and the pilot is in stable condition. This incident is under investigation,” he said.
If confirmed, the episode could mark the first instance of Iran targeting one of the US military’s most advanced fighter jets since the conflict began in February. The F-35, widely regarded as one of the most sophisticated combat aircraft in service, is estimated to cost over $100 million per unit.
Both the United States and Israel have been deploying F-35 jets as hostilities in the region continue to escalate.According to a Bloomberg report, at least 16 US military aircraft have been destroyed since the start of the conflict, including 10 Reaper drones. Six additional aircraft have reportedly been damaged in attacks or accidents.
Hegseth warns of ‘largest strike package yet’
Separately, US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth on Thursday warned that Iran could face the “largest strike package yet,” asserting that Washington is winning the conflict “decisively and on our terms”.
Speaking at a Pentagon briefing, Hegseth said the military campaign — code-named Operation Epic Fury — is “laser-focused” and aligned with objectives set by the US administration.
“Epic Fury is different. It’s laser-focused. It’s decisive. Our objectives…remain exactly as they were on Day One. We’re winning—decisively and on our terms,” he said.
