The military said US fighter aircraft destroyed Iranian air-defence systems, a ground control station, and two one-way attack drones that posed threats to vessels transiting regional waters. No American personnel were injured, it added.
“The measured and deliberate strikes occurred on Saturday and Sunday in response to aggressive Iranian actions that included the shootdown of a US MQ-1 drone that was operating over international waters,” CENTCOM said, adding that it would continue to protect US assets and interests in response to what it described as Iranian aggression during the ongoing ceasefire.The latest operation follows a series of US “self-defence” strikes in Iran over the past week.
On May 25, US forces struck missile launch sites and vessels allegedly attempting to lay mines in the Strait of Hormuz, which CENTCOM said threatened American forces and regional shipping. Days later, US aircraft targeted a drone ground-control station near Bandar Abbas and shot down multiple Iranian one-way attack drones.
Washington has maintained that the actions were defensive and aimed at protecting US personnel, military assets, and maritime traffic in the Gulf.
The military developments come even as Washington and Tehran continue negotiations over a potential agreement aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear programme.
US President Donald Trump on Sunday pushed back against media reports questioning the scope of the proposed deal, insisting that preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon remains at its core.
“Fake News CNN said today, routinely, that my Iran Nuclear Deal doesn’t talk about Nuclear, when actually it states, very clearly, that Iran will not have a Nuclear Weapon,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The agreement goes into “very strong and lengthy detail” on nuclear-related issues and criticised CNN’s coverage of the negotiations.
The war in West Asia is contained by a fragile ceasefire that was extended for another 60 days last week.
