US says Strait of Hormuz is open as Iran-linked authority claims transit is blocked

Date:

Conflicting statements over the status of the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, July 12, added to uncertainty over shipping through one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the Strait of Hormuz remains open to all vessels seeking to transit the international waterway lawfully and that US forces are positioned to ensure freedom of navigation.

“The Strait of Hormuz is open to all vessels seeking to lawfully transit the international waterway,” CENTCOM said. It added that “Iran does not control the strait” and that “traffic is flowing,” despite what it described as “unwarranted Iranian aggression, harassment, threats, and arbitrary declarations.”
CENTCOM also said more than 140 vessels had transited the strait over the past seven days.

Separately, the Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA), in a post on X, claimed that passage through the Strait of Hormuz was “currently not possible” because of what it described as the “recent illegal movements of the United States military forces in the region.”

The account said transit applications would be reviewed once “stability and calm are restored,” after which the necessary permits would be issued according to schedule. It also claimed that transit permits could be obtained only through its official website and urged applicants to follow its X account for updates.
