US softens Iran stance with temporary oil sanctions relief proposal: Report

Date:

The United States has reportedly agreed to temporarily suspend sanctions on Iran’s oil sector as part of a revised negotiation framework with Tehran, according to Iran’s Tasnim news agency.Citing a source close to Iran’s negotiating team, Tasnim reported that Washington’s new proposal includes a waiver on sanctions targeting Iranian oil exports during the negotiation period, rather than after a final agreement is signed.

“America has accepted the suspension of sanctions on Iranian oil in its new proposal,” the source said, adding that the move would amount to a temporary relief measure.
However, Tehran continues to push for a complete and permanent lifting of sanctions as part of any durable agreement.“Iran insists that the lifting of all sanctions must be part of America’s commitments,” the source said.

Tasnim added that the US proposal focuses on a temporary waiver mechanism linked to sanctions administered by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) until a comprehensive deal is reached.

The approach marks a departure from previous drafts by introducing limited sanctions relief during the talks themselves, in what appears to be an effort to break the impasse.

Meanwhile, Reuters reported that Iran submitted a revised proposal via Pakistan earlier in the day.

Tensions remain elevated. US President Donald Trump warned Tehran to accelerate negotiations, writing in a social media post: “For Iran, the clock is ticking, and they better get moving, FAST, or there won’t be anything left of them. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!”
