The Ukrainian leader will be accompanied by leaders of Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Finland, the European Union and NATO to the White House in the potential peace deal after Trump’s meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin on August 15.
Trump will meet first with Zelensky at 1:15 pm ED (10:45 pm IST) in the Oval Office before a multilateral meeting with all the European leaders in the White House’s East Room at 3 pm EDT (12:30 am IST).
Although the Trump-Putin meeting last week did not result in any deal or ceasefire, the Russian leader agreed to allow the US and European allies to offer Ukraine a security guarantee resembling NATO’s collective defense mandate.
However, Ukraine fears that Trump might pressure its leader into accepting a peace deal favourable to Russia, especially as Trump signalled on Sunday (August 17) that Zelensky must agree to some of Russia’s conditions. The US President said Zelensky could end the war “almost immediately if he wants to or he can continue to fight”.
Zelensky made clear last week that Ukraine will not give up land to bring an end to war but is ready to work with US President Donald Trump for real and lasting peace.
