Watch | Reporters take cover after gunshots heard near White House

Date:

A few reporters were seen taking cover during live broadcasts as multiple gunshots were fired near the White House on Saturday evening local time. The US Secret Service, a person approached a security checkpoint and opened fire at officers.CBS News reporter Aaron Navarro and ABC America reporter Selina Wang can be seen ducking and scrambling for cover in separate videos as gunfire erupted near the North Lawn press area around 6 pm ET. In the background, security officers can be heard instructing people to move.

“I was in the middle of taping on my iPhone for a social video from the White House North Lawn when we heard the shots. It sounded like dozens of gunshots. We were told to sprint to the press briefing room where we are holding now,” Wang later posted on X.

The Secret Service said the suspect removed a weapon from a bag and began firing at officers stationed at the checkpoint. Officers returned fire, striking the suspect, who was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

A bystander was also struck during the exchange, AP reported. However, authorities said it is unclear whether the injury was caused by the suspect’s gunfire or shots fired by officers.

No Secret Service personnel were injured, and President Donald Trump, who was inside the White House at the time, was not harmed.
