Supplies, potable water and medical access are emerging as key risks for ships stuck in the Gulf as the West Asia war enters its 24th day, John Stawpert said, flagging mounting strain on nearly 1,000 vessels and 20,000 seafarers.
“There are problems with stores on board the ships… with creating potable water, as well as with medical supplies and food,” he told CNBC-TV18, adding that it is “imperative that the international community works to ensure that these vessels are resupplied.”
His comments come even as Donald Trump announced a five-day pause in strikes on Iranian infrastructure, signalling early signs of de-escalation. However, Stawpert cautioned that clarity from Iran remains critical, noting there is “no guarantee” commitments from Tehran would be reflected by regional commanders at sea.
He stressed that seafarers are not abandoned and are receiving support, including double wages and repatriation rights, though psychological stress remains a concern. An International Maritime Organization framework is being explored to restore safe navigation, with industry coordination key to avoiding a chaotic rush once routes reopen.
