Holy See Press Office.Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, will preside at the mass, which will be concelebrated by patriarchs, cardinals, archbishops, bishops, and priests from across the globe.
The Eucharistic celebration will conclude with the Ultima commendatio and the Valedictio, the Holy See Press Office added.
The funeral schedule includes nine days of mourning called the Novendiales. And, the pope must be buried between the fourth and sixth days after death. Cardinals must now choose when the funeral can be held. They will meet today to plan Pope Francis’ funeral, which will be attended by the leaders from around the world. Till then, he will lie in state in a coffin.Known for his humility and simplicity, Pope Francis expressed his final wish to be buried in a simple tomb at Rome’s Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, a prominent Catholic church and papal basilica. Seven previous pontiffs are buried there, but he will be the first in more than a century to choose this location, which is located outside the Vatican. According to the Vatican-released will, he had arranged for an unknown benefactor to cover his burial expenses.
