Tamil Nadu-born Rini Sampath has secured a spot on the ballot for Mayor of Washington, DC, as a Democratic candidate, making history as the first South Asian to do so in a contest that has garnered national attention.The Democratic Party’s 31-year-old government contractor from Theni, Tamil Nadu, immigrated to the US at the age of seven and has spent over a decade in the country’s capital. Samapth has built her campaign around the slogan “Fix the Basics” and the promise of “A new DC.”

“I’m not a politician. I have no obligations to any special interest organisations. It’s time for an outsider who is relentlessly focused on fixing our basic city services,” Sampath said on her campaign website.

Sampath received her degree in communications from the University of Southern California (USC). As president of USC’s Undergraduate Student Government in 2015, she gained significant media attention by advocating for student rights, diversity, and campus safety.

She also received acclaim from progressive student organisations after she spoke out about racism and harassment during her tenure, but became a victim of online hate.She has presented herself as an outsider during her professional life, characterising herself as a federal contractor who has dedicated her career to enhancing citizen services and government programs without the support of special interest organisations.

Her campaign focuses on issues with the cost of living, 911 response times, infrastructure maintenance, and rebuilding public confidence in local government. As of early filings, Sampath had raised about $15,000 through the city’s Fair Elections public funding programme.

A publicly elected mayor and a 13-member district council oversee the District of Columbia. Democrats predominate in Washington, DC, and the city has never had a Republican mayor since the position’s elections started in 1975. Prior to that, the US president appointed a Board of Commissioners to run the city.

Sampath enters a crowded Democratic primary race that includes prominent individuals, including former council members Vincent Orange and Kenyan McDuffie, civil rights lawyer Yaida Ford, and Council member Janeese Lewis George.

Given that the current Mayor Muriel Bowser is not running for re-election, the contest is expected to be competitive.
