Who is Vance Luther Boelter? From state appointee to fugitive in Minnesota lawmaker shootings

Date:

Vance Luther Boelter, 57, is at the centre of a massive manhunt in Minnesota after being named the primary suspect in a pair of targeted shootings that killed State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, and seriously injured State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette. As federal and state authorities close in, the question gripping the public is: Who is Vance Luther Boelter, and what led him to allegedly carry out such a politically charged act of violence?

Who is Vance Luther Boelter
Boelter is a former public official who once held appointments under both Democratic governors of Minnesota. In 2016, he was appointed to the Governor’s Workforce Development Council by then-Governor Mark Dayton. He was reappointed in 2019 to the Governor’s Workforce Development Board by current Governor Tim Walz. According to state records, his term ended in January 2023.

These roles suggest Boelter was previously trusted in policy circles concerned with labour and employment strategy.

Professionally, Boelter worked as Director of Security Patrols for a private security firm in Minnesota.

Before that, his LinkedIn profile indicates he held positions as a general manager at a convenience store chain and as an employee at a food manufacturing company.

His background spans the retail, food production, and private security industries, hinting at a career that combined managerial responsibility with operational enforcement.

Boelter’s known address is a rural property near Green Isle in Sibley County, Minnesota.

What happened in Minnesota on June 14

On June 14, authorities believe he carried out two calculated attacks on lawmakers, allegedly impersonating a police officer to gain access.

The FBI released images showing a man they believe to be Boelter wearing a police-style uniform and a realistic latex mask outside one of the targeted homes.

He was last seen in Minneapolis that morning, wearing a light-coloured cowboy hat, a dark long-sleeved shirt, light trousers, and carrying a dark bag.

He is described as six feet one inch tall, weighing approximately 220 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.

Political affiliations under scanner

Investigators found materials in his vehicle that point to political motivations. These included a manifesto, fliers referencing “No Kings” in connection with planned protests against the Trump administration, and a list of potential targets.

According to ABC News, the list contained names of prominent Minnesota Democrats such as Governor Tim Walz, Representative Ilhan Omar, Senator Tina Smith, and Attorney General Keith Ellison.

CNN reported that abortion providers and pro-abortion rights activists were also included. These findings suggest Boelter was planning a broader attack on political and ideological opponents.

$50,000 reward for information

At a press conference, Drew Evans, Superintendent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, confirmed that Boelter is considered armed and dangerous.

Authorities briefly cornered him at Representative Hortman’s home, but he escaped.

The FBI has since offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to his arrest and conviction.

Boelter’s transformation from a government board member to a man at the top of the FBI’s wanted list has stunned Minnesota and ignited national concern over politically motivated violence.
