Xi warns Trump not to misstep on Taiwan, ‘the biggest common denominator’ in US-China ties

Chinese President Xi Jinping has warned the US not to jeopardise its ties over Taiwan independence and cross-Strait peace, which Xi views “as irreconcilable as fire and water”.Trump is in Beijing for a high-stakes meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, for two days from May 14-15. Xi is expected to be in Washington a few months later in fall, according to US Ambassador to China David Perdue.

Xi Jinping reportedly called the Taiwan issue “the biggest common denominator” between China and the US, warning that any disagreements over it would beget “clashes and even conflicts”.
“Xi told Trump that if it is handled properly, the bilateral relationship will enjoy overall stability,” state media Xinhua reported.US President Donald Trump, after he met with Xi, did not respond to questions about Taiwan. According to AP reports, his only remark following the meeting was a single-word response: “great”.
