Welcome to California, my friends.
I loved hanging out with you today.Sulaiman and @Kasim_Khan_1999you must stay strong. There are millions of people around the world who are sick of political prosecutions.
You are not alone. #freeimrankhan pic.twitter.com/TOAOjrEiM1— Richard Grenell (@RichardGrenell) July 22, 2025
The meeting has drawn international attention to Imran Khan’s continued imprisonment in Pakistan. The former Prime Minister has been in jail since August 2023. According to human rights groups and Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), his detention is politically motivated.
Grenell’s post comes amid growing global concerns over Khan’s condition in Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi. He is reportedly being held in solitary confinement, with no access to newspapers, books, or television.
This isn’t the first time Grenell has voiced support for Khan. As reported by Mint, Grenell had earlier spoken in Khan’s favour during Trump’s 2024 campaign trail. Appearing on conservative news outlet Newsmax, he praised Khan’s leadership and criticised the current Pakistani government.
“We had a much better relationship with Pakistan during the Trump administration when a guy named Imran Khan was the leader,” Grenell said. He described Khan as a “political outsider with common-sense views.”
Grenell also drew a parallel between Khan’s situation in Pakistan and Trump’s legal troubles in the US. “He’s currently in prison, facing many of the same allegations as President Trump,” he said, urging that the former cricketer be released.
The meeting between Grenell and Khan’s sons is being seen as another strong signal of support from Trump’s circle.
