Chennai-based IT player Zoho has launched a major lake restoration initiative in Tamil Nadu. Announcing the move, company founder Sridhar Vembu highlighted that it was part of an effort to improve groundwater levels and support water conservation.“Restoring ground water levels is very vital for our nation. We care about that deeply at Zoho. This work is good to do during a dry year, as the current year is shaping up to be…,” Vembu posted on X on Friday.
The company is carrying out the work in partnership with local non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
The restoration covers seven lakes across the districts of Thanjavur and Pudukkottai, with a combined area of around 1,200 acres.Zoho aims to complete the projects before the arrival of the next monsoon season.“We have started the work in Thanjavur district and will start in Pudukottai district in 1-2 weeks. We want to complete these before the next monsoon arrives,” Vembu announced.
According to Vembu’s X post, the lakes included in the project are Aavanam Lake (123 acres), Kayavor Lake (114.41 acres), and Periyanayagiamman Lake (383 acres) in Tanjavur district.In Pudukkottai district, the initiative covers Neduvasal Lake (133 acres), Aalangudi Lake (148 acres), Paravakottai Lake (47.36 acres), and Visalur Lake (246.87 acres).He highlighted that the work is especially important this year, as the region is expected to experience dry conditions.The predictions of a weaker monsoon this year due to factors such as El Nino have triggered widespread concerns about water security and impact on agriculture.Zoho’s efforts to restore lakes is focussed on improving groundwater recharge and strengthening local water resources for long-term security.With over 40,000 views on X, Vembu earned praise for announcing the initiative. People appreciated the billionaire’s “giving back to the society” mindset.Some also urged the Zoho founder to look into initiatives about planting more trees.
