Beijing urges US to stop hyping ‘China threat theory’ and speak cautiously on ‘Taiwan issue’

Date:

China has asked the United States to ‘stop hyping’ the idea that Beijing is a threat. The reaction came after a US intelligence report claimed China had no plans to invade Taiwan next year.Speaking at a press conference, China’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Lin Jian, said that the US should be careful in how it talks and acts on the Taiwan issue. He said the US should be careful in how it sees China and avoid making it look like a threat.

“The US should speak and act cautiously on the Taiwan issue and should correct their understanding of China, and stop hyping up the China threat theory,” he told a press conference.
The US intelligence report, 2026 Annual Threat Assessment, said China wants to control Taiwan in 2027 without using force. The report came even as China has stepped up pressure on Taiwan through frequent military drills.
“China, despite its threat to use force to compel unification if necessary and to counter what it sees as a US attempt to use Taiwan to undermine China’s rise, prefers to achieve unification without the use of force, if possible,” the US intelligence agencies said in the report. Some people in Washington believed that China might be ready to invade Taiwan by 2027, because that’s when the Chinese military (PLA) is expected to have enough capabilities.

But the US intelligence report says this does not mean China will actually attack because many political and military factors will influence the decision.

“The [intelligence community] assesses that Chinese leaders do not currently plan to execute an invasion of Taiwan in 2027, nor do they have a fixed timeline for achieving unification,” the report added.

“Beijing almost certainly will consider a variety of factors in deciding whether and how to pursue military approaches to unification, including PLA readiness, the actions and politics of Taiwan, and whether or not the US will militarily intervene on Taiwan’s behalf,” the report mentioned.

The US does not officially recognise Taiwan as a separate country, but it has promised to help Taiwan defend itself. This comes from the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act and other policies. The US helps Taiwan by selling weapons and providing military training to its forces.
