Chennai Petroleum shares tumble 10% after Q1 profit drops sequentially, margins halve

Shares of Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd. fell close to 10% on Thursday, July 23, after the state-run refiner reported a 27.4% sequential decline in standalone net profit for the June quarter, to ₹1,016.7 crore from ₹1,399.7 crore in the March quarter.The company’s revenue from operations rose 43.5% sequentially to ₹29,358.8 crore, while total income increased to ₹29,376.5 crore.

Profit before tax declined to ₹1,365.6 crore from ₹1,890.4 crore in the preceding quarter as total expenses increased sharply. The company’s EBITDA fell 24% sequentially to ₹1,555.5 crore, while EBITDA margin narrowed to 5.7% from 12% in the March quarter.

During the quarter, Chennai Petroleum recognised an additional revenue of ₹385.2 crore following a retrospective revision in the prices of certain petroleum products effective March 16, 2026.Excluding this one-off adjustment, the company’s average gross refining margin (GRM) for the April-June period stood at $8.78 per barrel, compared with $3.22 per barrel in the corresponding quarter last year.

Refiners like Chennai Petro have been in focus all through the Iran war and the subsequent ceasefire, when brent crude reached highs of $125 a barrel.

Oil prices have rebounded again after the latest round of the US-Iran war. Brent crude is now trading close to $100 a barrel, compared to sub-$70 levels it had declined to after the MoU signing announcement between the US and Iran.

Shares of the company fell about 9.8% following the results announcement, but recovered some of the losses and were trading at ₹1,259.80, still down 3.7%. The stock has gained about 50% in the last six months and about 62% over the past year.
