The Government has notified the two SEZs after the proposals received approval from the Board of Approval for SEZs under the Department of Commerce during its 137th meeting held on February 27.Among the two projects, an IT/ITES SEZ will be developed by M/s Oulgaret Municipality at Thattanchavady village in Oulgaret Taluk, making it the first SEZ in India to be developed by an Urban Local Body.
Spread across 8.623 hectares, the project entails a proposed investment of ₹725 crore and is expected to create around 3,500 direct and indirect employment opportunities.
The second project, a Multi-Sector SEZ, will be developed by the Pondicherry Industrial Promotion Development and Investment Corporation (PIPDIC) at Karasur village in Villianur Taluk.The SEZ, spread over 86.24 hectares, is expected to attract investments worth ₹1,250 crore and generate nearly 5,000 direct and indirect jobs.The Union Budget 2026-27 had proposed a special one-time measure to facilitate sales in the domestic tariff area at concessional duty rates by eligible manufacturing units operating in SEZs, subject to a prescribed proportion of exports.As of February 28, 2026, India had 368 notified SEZs. Exports from operational SEZs stood at over ₹11.70 lakh crore during 2025-26 (till December 2025), registering a 32.02% growth over the corresponding period of 2024-25.
