Piyush Goyal, Jamieson Greer meet in New York to discuss India-US trade deal

Date:

India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in New York to discuss the first phase of a trade agreement between the two countries. The meeting follows recent talks in Delhi between US official Brendan Lynch and India’s chief trade negotiator Rajesh Agrawal, where both sides agreed to accelerate negotiations.
Officials addressed key trade issues and expressed optimism about reaching an interim deal soon.

The visit highlights both countries’ commitment to strengthening bilateral economic ties amid shifting global trade practices. The talks resumed shortly after US President Donald Trump called Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sept. 16 to wish him a happy 75th birthday. Modi thanked Trump and expressed support for his efforts to bring peace to Ukraine..The discussions are likely to cover a wide range of issues including market access, digital trade, intellectual property rights, tariff barriers, among others. The Indian delegation’s objective will be to build on the momentum of previous engagements and to bring a closure to the developments. The meeting is significant as it marks one of the highest-level trade interactions between the two nations since higher tariffs were implemented by the Trump administration. Relations between India and the US had seen substantial improvement, with bilateral trade touching $200 billion in 2024-25, making the US India’s largest trading partner.
