Piyush Goyal talks trade expansion with US commerce secy Lutnick amid tariff uncertainty

Date:

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal discussed expanding trade and economic activity with US commerce secretary Howard Lutnick and ambassador Sergio Gor despite little clarity on the final tariff that Indian exporters will pay the US.

“Engaged in very fruitful discussions to expand our trade and economic partnership,” Goyal posted on Xsaying he hosted the US officials.

The latest bout of uncertainty comes as US President Donald Trump scurried to find alternate ways to impose tariff after the Supreme Court deemed his sweeping tariffs illegal and ruled that the President has no authority to do so.

The US has since started charging 10% tariffs on global imports, according to a notice issued by the US Customs and Border Protection. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer echoed Trump’s social media posts stating the rate would go up to 15% for some countries, without specifying any country.

A formal executive order to that end has not been issued yet. However, President Trump has warned countries of “much higher tariff” if they “play games”.
