In a social media post, Trump said Britain was “finally giving serious thought” to deploying two carriers to the region but dismissed the idea as unnecessary.
“The United Kingdom, our once Great Ally, maybe the Greatest of them all, is finally giving serious thought to sending two aircraft carriers to the Middle East. That’s OK, Prime Minister Starmer, we don’t need them any longer — But we will remember. We don’t need people that join Wars after we’ve already won!” Trump wrote.
The comments come as the war triggered by coordinated US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28 enters its second week, with attacks spreading across West Asia and beyond.
British officials have said no final decision has been made on sending naval forces to the region, though the Royal Navy’s aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales has been placed on heightened readiness for possible deployment, according to Reuters.
The dispute also follows earlier tensions between US and the UK as the latter initially hesitated to allow US forces to use some of its military bases. British authorities later permitted the use of certain facilities for what they described as defensive missions.
The escalating war has strained long-standing Western alliances with NATO member Spain outrightly denying the US access to its military bases for attacks on Iran, stating the European country stands firmly against war.
