US seeks to expand energy exports to India, says Marco Rubio

Date:

Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday said the United States wants to significantly expand energy exports to India, as it aims to sell as much oil and gas as New Delhi is willing to purchase.Speaking to reporters, he said US production and exports are currently at record levels and that Washington is looking to deepen its presence in India’s energy mix through ongoing discussions.

He also pointed to potential opportunities in Venezuelan oil as part of broader efforts to expand US energy outreach. Rubio said he understood that Venezuela’s interim president is also expected to visit India next week.
He said, “There is a lot to work on with India. They are a great ally, a great partner. We do a lot of good work with them. So, this is an important trip.”

Rubio will undertake a four-day visit to India beginning May 23 to further cooperation in the fields of trade, defence and energy. Rubio will travel from Sweden to India, where he will attend the NATO Foreign Ministers’ meeting on May 22.

On broader foreign policy, Rubio said there has been some progress in discussions with Iran, while also expressing concern over NATO unity and burden-sharing.

He questioned alliance cohesion, particularly if member states restrict access to US bases, underscoring ongoing tensions within the bloc.

He said, “If NATO countries like Spain are denying us the use of these bases, why are we in NATO? We need to discuss that.”
