World’s tallest bridge opens in China, slashes travel time across the canyon from 2 hours to 2 minutes

China has unveiled the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge in Guizhou province, officially the world’s highest bridge. Towering 625 meters above the canyon floor, this engineering marvel promises to transform travel in one of the country’s most rugged regions. According to the BBC, the bridge dramatically reduces travel time across the canyon, from a gruelling two-hour journey to just two minutes.Live drone footage broadcast on September 28 by Chinese state media captured vehicles gliding across the bridge, its striking blue support towers partially enveloped by clouds. The opening ceremony attracted a large crowd, including local officials and project engineers, who expressed pride in the achievement during interviews, first reported by AFP and later quoted by NDTV World.

The bridge’s opening was marked by a spectacular water curtain display. A spokesperson from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted on X, “Rising 625 meters above the river and set to be the world’s tallest, the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge in Guizhou, SW China, unveiled a spectacular water curtain test, where sunlight and spray merged to paint a rainbow over the canyon.”

Commenting on the project, Shen Shiwe, a journalist, analyst, and commentator on China’s politics, shared on X, “China’s global mega project! The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is in the mountainous Guizhou province. China constructed the world’s tallest bridge, wowed with its 300-meter rainbow waterfall screen!”

About the Bridge

Stretching 2,900 meters in total with a main span of 1,420 meters, the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge posed formidable engineering challenges, NDTV World reported. Project manager Wu Zhaoming of Guizhou Transportation Investment Group Co., Ltd., highlighted difficulties such as managing temperatures during large-scale concrete pours, stabilising steep canyon slopes, and mitigating the impact of strong winds. Despite these hurdles, the team completed the project ahead of schedule, creating the largest span bridge in mountainous terrain.

The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge reinforces China’s dominance in global bridge construction, with eight of the ten tallest bridges in the world already located in Guizhou province. Experts say the bridge not only enhances local connectivity but also symbolises China’s capability in executing mega infrastructure projects in challenging landscapes.
