The move was announced by head of product, Nikita Bier, who said accounts that share synthetic conflict without clearly labelling it as AI-generated will lose access to monetisation. Repeat violations could lead to permanent removal from the programme.
The decision comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions in West Asia amid escalating military action in the region after the US and Israel launched coordinated attacks on Iran.
Against that backdrop, an AI-generated video depicting an airstrike on the Burj Khalifa spread rapidly on the platform, racking up more than 8 million views. The clip appeared realistic enough to briefly confuse some users before it was identified as synthetic.
X said the new rule is designed to prevent creators from profiting off misleading synthetic content tied to armed conflicts. Users can still post AI-generated videos, but they must clearly disclose that the material is artificial to remain eligible for the platform’s revenue-sharing programme.
The episode highlights a growing concern among governments and technology platforms that generative AI could amplify misinformation during geopolitical crises, as increasingly realistic synthetic videos circulate online alongside real footage from conflict zones.
