BRICS agriculture meet kickstarts in Indore; food security, climate-smart farming in focus

Date:

Senior officials from BRICS countries have gathered in Indore on Tuesday for a five-day agriculture meeting that will focus on strengthening food security, promoting climate-resilient farming practices and expanding cooperation in agricultural trade.

The meeting, held under India’s BRICS chairmanship, marks the start of discussions among the bloc’s Agriculture Working Group, with deliberations scheduled through June 11.

Officials are set to discuss a broad agenda ranging from farmer welfare and nutrition to digital agriculture, supply chains, research collaboration and the use of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and robotics in the farm sector, PTI reported.

The official-level talks will be followed by a meeting of BRICS agriculture ministers on June 12-13. Member countries are expected to adopt a joint declaration outlining areas of cooperation and shared priorities in agriculture.

The agriculture discussions come ahead of the annual BRICS summit later this year, where leaders of the grouping are expected to review cooperation across trade, development, food security and other strategic sectors.

The event is being hosted in Indore, with the Madhya Pradesh government having designated 2026 as the Year of Farmer Welfare.

BRICS has expanded into an 11-member grouping comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia.
